CNSC informed of small heavy water spill at Chalk River Laboratories
On April 26, 2010, the CNSC learned from AECL of a small heavy water spill (approximately 42 litres) that occured during refilling of the NRU Main Heavy Water Circuit at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). CNSC staff on site at CRL are monitoring AECL's investigation into the spill by observing meetings, related work orders and the procedures followed to prevent reoccurence. Releases to the environment were within licensed operating limits and well below AECL's reportableaction levels.
The CNSC is satisfied with the actions AECL has taken to resolve the situation and will continue its regulatory oversight at CRL to ensure the continued health and safety of the workers, the public and the environment.
