Update: Potential Alpha Exposure of Workers – CNSC Request to all CANDU licensees

AECL responses

The CNSC has received responses from the AECL operator of the Chalk River Laboratories, Douglas Point, Whiteshell Laboratories, Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD), regarding the requests for action pursuant to sub-section 12(2) of the General Nuclear Safety and Control Regulations issued on June 22, 2010. 

CNSC staff finds the proposed plans for completion of requested actions acceptable.  The CNSC is satisfied that AECL will complete the required risk identification and characterization surveys, and gap analyses of current work controls in a timely manner.  

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) responses

The CNSC has received responses from Ontario Power Generation, operator of the Pickering, Darlington and Western Waste Management Facilities, regarding the requests for action pursuant to sub-section 12(2) of the General Nuclear Safety and Control Regulations issued on June 22, 2010. 

CNSC staff finds the proposed plans for completion of requested actions acceptable.  The CNSC is satisfied that OPG will complete the required risk identification and characterization surveys, and gap analyses of current work controls in a timely manner.  

CNSC is tracking the implementation of corrective actions, as per established commitments and timelines provided in the licensees' responses.
