Amendment to Class II Nuclear Facilities and Prescribed Equipment Regulations

Latest update

Current Status

The Regulations Amending the Class II Nuclear Facilities and Prescribed Equipment Regulations and accompanying Regulatory Impact Analysis Statement were published in the May 26, 2010 edition of the Canada Gazette, Part II.

Description

The amendment to the Class II Nuclear Facilities and Prescribed Equipment Regulations ensures that a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) appointed by a licensee has completed the certification process and has obtained the necessary knowledge and experience to be fully qualified for the role. This gives added assurance to the workers and the public that acceptable radiation safety practices are followed.

The amendment requires:

  • every licensee who operates a Class II nuclear facility or who services Class II prescribed equipment to appoint a RSO;
  • the licensee to inform the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) of their intent to appoint a new RSO;
  • the prospective RSO to successfully complete an examination recognized by the CNSC;
  • the RSO to be certified by the CNSC; and
  • the licensee to designate in writing a person qualified to replace the certified RSO during the RSO’s absence.
