Crossword Puzzle 1 – Instructions and Teacher Resources
Crossword Puzzle 1 is one of several games and puzzles in the CNSC's educational resources aimed at students aged 12–13. The aim of the puzzle is to learn more about the nuclear sector. Players correctly fill in the boxes with the answers to clues reading across and down, similar to a regular crossword puzzle.
This page provides instructions for both mouse and keyboard players, including tips for players using screen readers, as well as PDF game versions that can be printed and played in a classroom. The answers are under "Teacher resources".
Mouse instructions
Tip: The player can increase the size of the text by selecting Control + or decrease it by selecting Control −. The player may also exit at any time by selecting Close at the top of the screen.
Inspector Geiger, the cartoon character who guides students through the educational resources pages, appears at the top of the screen to give instructions. To start, the player reads a numbered clue and clicks in the first box with the same number. The player types the first letter. The cursor jumps to the next box, and the player continues to type each letter until the word is completed. The player reads the rest of the clues and continues to play in the same way.
If the word already contains letters that were filled in by answering a previous clue, the player tabs to or clicks the next box to continue filling in the letters.
When the player has entered all the answers, any errors are displayed in red. The player clicks on the message to clear the wrong letters and tries again.
When the player has correctly finished the puzzle, Inspector Geiger appears again, saying: "Congratulations!"
Below Inspector Geiger are the answers and an image of two thumbs up as a sign of victory. The time it took to complete the game also appears. And a message lets the player know that they are well on their way to becoming a junior nuclear safety representative. Each student can also type their name and select Print or Enter to print the results to hand in to the teacher.
Keyboard instructions
To play the game using the keyboard, the student uses the Tab, Shift+Tab and Enter keys. The player can also increase the size of the text by selecting Control + or decrease it by selecting Control −. The player may exit at any time by selecting the Esc key.
Inspector Geiger, the cartoon character who guides students through the educational resources pages, appears at the top of the screen to give instructions. He instructs players to read the clues down and across and then type their answers.
To start, the player tabs to a clue and selects Enter. The cursor jumps to the first box of the answer inside the puzzle and the player types the first letter. The cursor jumps to the next box, and the player continues to type each letter until the word is completed. The player continues the game by tabbing to clues and entering answers in the same manner.
Tip: Players who want to enter the answers out of order can tab or shift-tab to the desired clue. They can also shift-tab when entering the answer to correct errors.
Players using screen readers are also told how many letters are in the word before the clue is read. When the player completes the word, the next clue is read.
If the word already contains letters that were filled in by answering a previous clue, the player tabs to the next box to continue filling in the letters.
When the player has entered all the answers, any errors are displayed in red. A message tells the player about the mistakes. The player tabs to the message and selects Enter to clear the mistakes, then tabs or shift-tabs to each clue, and tries again to type the right answer.
When the player has correctly finished the puzzle, Inspector Geiger appears again, saying: "Congratulations!"
Below Inspector Geiger are the answers and an image of two thumbs up as a sign of victory. The time it took to complete the game also appears.
