The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) invites public comment on the Environmental Assessment (EA) draft Comprehensive Study Report (CSR) for Cameco Corporation's (Cameco) proposed Redevelopment of the Port Hope Conversion Facility (Vision 2010).
The Vision 2010 project involves a comprehensive redevelopment of Cameco’s Port Hope Conversion Facility (PHCR) located in Port Hope, Ontario. The project consists of decommissioning and demolishing 23 old or underutilized buildings on the main site, and demolishing or remediating 4 buildings on the Centre Pier, removing contaminated soils, building materials and stored historical wastes, and constructing new buildings. Three of the 20 buildings are Class 1B nuclear facilities used to refine or convert uranium with a capacity of more than 100 tonnes per year. Class 1 B nuclear facilities with this capacity are listed on the Comprehensive Study List Regulations of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). Therefore, the proposed project is subject to a comprehensive study type EA.
The public comment period runs from September 22 to October 22, 2011. This public comment period is in addition to and does not replace the CEAA requirement for a 30-day Ministerial public comment period on the CSR. The Minister of the Environment is responsible for the EA decisions on Comprehensive Study EAs.
Interested parties should address their written comments to the CNSC Environmental Assessment Specialist at the address indicated below. All comments received by the public will be considered by the CNSC before the Commission sends the report to the Minister of the Environment and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency for the Ministerial public comment period. All comments received regarding the draft Comprehensive Study Report will be public information.
